LETTERS OF RICHARD WAGNER TO MINNA & MATHILDE - 2-Volume Edition

$ 25.00

Before Cosima began to create the myths around her husband, Richard Wagner, two women dominated his quotidian life: his first wife, Minna, and the wife of one of his devoted patrons, Mathilde Wesendonck, for whom we have to thank for being the inspiration of the Wesendonck-Lieder and the landmark opera, Tristan und Isolde. These letters reveal a Wagner who had not yet reached the legendary levels of notoriety and renown of his later years. Yet Wagner's ego is already enormous. He is, at times clear-sighted about his situations and clairvoyant in his thoughts of the future; noble and passionate about his work, whiny and self-pitying about circumstances.
