Summer at San Francisco Opera Shop

Posted by Jay Stebley

It's the Summer Season at the War Memorial Opera house and we are seeing the marvelous send-off San Francisco Opera is giving to its illustrious, industrious and wholly admirable General Director, David Gockley.  Even if there had been no sensational gala celebrating his fabulous tenure, the three operas David has chosen for the final segment of his last season are extraordinary productions of extraordinary operas. In particular, Mr. Gockley has given us one of the most beautiful and moving accounts of Leoš Janáček’s break-through masterpiece, JENŮFA.  As one who has studied Janáček’s music for 40 years, I can testify to the power and sincerity of this production - please make an effort to see it before it closes!

Verdi's DON CARLO is a masterpiece of another kind and its challenges are epic. Mr. Gockley has assembled the stellar cast which is required for this opera to be a success let alone performed.  For the occasion, famed Bay Area artist Michael Schwab has created the last in a suite of posters commissioned by San Francisco Opera to commemorate operas special to Mr. Gockley's decade at the helm.  Please see the latest poster on the Opera Shop website.

2015-2016 Season in Full Swing!

Posted by Jay Stebley

The San Francisco Opera Shop continues to feature CD's and DVD's of the operas seen this season. Looking forward to a splendid production of Wagner's "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg", we are featuring James Levine's impressive MET account on DG with Karita Mattila and Rene Pape, both of whom will be heard here this season. You can also find the provocative Calixto Bieito production of "Carmen" which will be on our stage in June.  This sensational production raised eyebrows and temperatures at its premiere in 2012. You can prepare yourself for the live experience by catching it on DVD or Blu-Ray from the Opera Shop.

For those who missed the chance to buy the commemorative tee shirts featuring the poster art created by Michael Schwab for The Trojans, you can still purchase on-line here.  People are still talking about that fabulous production!
