It's the Summer Season at the War Memorial Opera house and we are seeing the marvelous send-off San Francisco Opera is giving to its illustrious, industrious and wholly admirable General Director, David Gockley. Even if there had been no sensational gala celebrating his fabulous tenure, the three operas David has chosen for the final segment of his last season are extraordinary productions of extraordinary operas. In particular, Mr. Gockley has given us one of the most beautiful and moving accounts of Leoš Janáček’s break-through masterpiece, JENŮFA. As one who has studied Janáček’s music for 40 years, I can testify to the power and sincerity of this production - please make an effort to see it before it closes!
Verdi's DON CARLO is a masterpiece of another kind and its challenges are epic. Mr. Gockley has assembled the stellar cast which is required for this opera to be a success let alone performed. For the occasion, famed Bay Area artist Michael Schwab has created the last in a suite of posters commissioned by San Francisco Opera to commemorate operas special to Mr. Gockley's decade at the helm. Please see the latest poster on the Opera Shop website.
